Our Story

Formed from the core of Atlanta cover band Metro Music, HSM first came together in the fall of 2004.  Metro Music’s founder, guitarist Bill Hawes, along with keyboardist Beverly Hawes and bassist Rob Reeves, took to heart what God had been telling them to do and began to consider changing directions from playing secular covers to exclusively composing and performing Gospel Rock.  Almost as a confirmation of God’s hand in this, it was during this time that God, through a mutual friend, brought together Bill and guitarist John MacCullen, two old friends who hadn’t seen each other in over 25 years.  The chemistry between the two was immediate. To complete the band, Bill invited John and then recruited drummer Mark Honeycutt.  Because of their individual talents, their love for the Lord, and their inspirational guidance, the choice was a natural fit.  “Playing Christian music is all about worship,” says Mark.  “Being able to use the talents and gifts God has given us to glorify Him is truly a blessing.”  Bill says that its fun being a Christian musician, “Music has always been a big part of my Christian life.  Whether it is traditional hymns, or rock-n-roll contemporary, I've always been around music.  Taking the energy that God has given me to deliver His words through music, and channeling that to a congregation is awesome!  You never know who you will touch with your positive God-attitude.”  Beverly then sums it up by saying, “Everything good comes from God, so that pretty much leaves the door wide open.  We can find joy in so many of God’s creations and pleasure in His goodness and grace.”
From its inception, HSM was determined to not just be a cover band playing the songs of other Christian artists.  And so, heavily influenced by their roots in Southern rock, as well as the sounds of other prominent artists of the “classic” rock period, the band set about the task of writing original songs.  “We really felt God’s call to share our personal testimonies through the songs that He has given to us,” songwriter and guitarist John MacCullen says.  “And God has honored that call by blessing us with more songs than we can currently record.”

HSM’s debut CD, Do You Recall, on the Tate Music Group (TMG) label is now available through HSM’s website and has an official release date of June 01, 2010. Talking about the disc’s title cut, songwriter and guitarist Bill Hawes tells of where his inspiration comes from, “We tend to write a lot of songs about personal experiences and about our testimonies.  This song is about my rebirth as a Christian with the influence of God and the support of my best friend, Beverly.”

Do You Recall consists of nine songs, but the band currently has a repertoire of over 25 original compositions.  These songs range from soaring, inflective ballads to Christian rock and roll and most everything in between.  “We look forward to getting more of our songs recorded and available for people to hear,” says John.  “But I think what excites us the most is waiting to see what God has in store for us in the future.”  And while the future can sometimes be an unknown, the joy that comes from obedience to God’s call is never in question.  Beverly says it best by saying, “Playing in the band is just our way of sharing God’s love with others through joyful and meaningful expression.  We have put our words and experiences to music to glorify the King, and hopefully show our audiences how to do the same.”

The HSM Statement of Belief

  • We, the members of HSM, believe in an eternal God existing in three persons: God the Father, Jesus Christ His Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  • We believe that man was made in the image of God, but then fell from God’s grace through sin.
  • We believe that in order for fellowship to be restored, God sent His only begotten Son into the world to take man’s sin upon Himself.
  • We believe that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, was born of a virgin, is true God and true man, and is the only man to live a completely sin free life.
  • We believe that the sin of mankind was placed on the shoulders of Jesus and that He was crucified as a propitiation for man’s sins.
  • We believe that Jesus Christ was crucified, buried, and on the third day, resurrected from the grave!
  • We believe that Jesus appeared to men for forty days after His resurrection and ascended into heaven where He sits at the mighty right hand of God.
  • We believe that Jesus is the only true mediator between man and God (John 14:6).
  • We believe that when man expresses a sincere desire to fellowship with God, confesses and repents of his sins, confesses with his mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, and believes in his heart that Jesus was raised from the dead, that he is saved (Romans 10:9).
  • We believe that this salvation is a gift from God (Romans 6:23), cannot be earned by man (Ephesians 2:8‐9), was bought and paid for by the blood of Jesus shed on the cross (Romans 3:24‐25), and that when man is saved he becomes a new creation in Christ (II Corinthians 5:17). Further, we believe that the Holy Bible does not merely contain the Word of God, but that it is the Word of God.
  • We believe that the Holy Bible is without error, is infallible, and is the only written revelation from God to man.
  • We believe that the central theme of the Holy Bible is God’s plan of salvation through the cleansing blood of His Son Jesus Christ. We believe that the Holy Bible is useful for teaching, correcting, rebuking, and training in righteousness (II Timothy 3:16); and that it is the ultimate and final authority on all matters of which it speaks.
